Report fuels call for community sentences10.26.09am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 25th Sep 2008 Commenting on a report to the Scottish Parliament’s Audit Committee showing that prisoner numbers were over the “safe limit”, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said: “This report backs up our call for very short term prison sentences to be replaced with tough community sentences. “Filling prisons with repeat offenders for short term sentences has been proven as ineffective, costs a fortune and does very little to protect the public. It also puts intolerable pressure on resources that could be used to rehabilitate long-term, serious offenders.”
